If you are a big fan of Rihanna then you probably couldn’t wait to see her starring in her first major film role in the movie Battleship. She plays the part of Cora Raikes, a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones and her performance won her a Teen Choice Award for “Choice Breakout in a Film”. Although this is her first major film, she has had previous cameo roles in “Bring It On: All Or Nothing” in 2006 and in the Katy Perry film “Part Of Me” this year. Next year she will star in the film “End Of The World” which is due to be released in June 2013 and also features Emma Watson and Seth Rogan.

Battleship is based on the popular strategic board game of the same name, and is brought to life by director Peter Berg in an epic sci-fi adventure, pitting an international navy fleet against an army of invading aliens. With the two sides being evenly matched, then they must rely on cunning and strategy in order to win. One scene shows the main characters using a grid system to target alien ships that can’t be seen on radar. It features a loud “rock” soundtrack and unrelenting battle sequences and is just the kind of movie you need to see for a great night out.

One of the highlights of the year for any enthusiastic Justin Bieber fan must surely have been the release of his movie Never Say Never. It follows the star in a 10 day countdown to what is considered to be his biggest performance yet – that of 31st August 2010 at Madison Square Garden in New York. A gig which sold out in a record 22 minutes.

It shows footage of excited female fans (something all young girls can identify with) and features the One Less Lonely Girl routine, where he invites one or two girls up on stage to be the object of his affection, while he performs the song and presents them with flowers. Other fans are left surprised and speechless when he presents them with free tickets to his concert.

Bieber himself is not actually interviewed in the film, which concentrates on talking to members of his family and friends instead and also features several instances of him praying before he embarks on the concert.

He pays a visit to his home town in Canada and whilst having fun with old friends, damages his voice to such an extent that he has to postpone his next scheduled date in Syracuse to allow his voice to recover.

Also included are video clips and stories of his childhood, behind the scenes footage and tour clips including Bieber throwing his shirt into the crowd.

Justin Bieber on MUZU.TV.

It can be an extremely profitable move for a casino to appear as itself in a film, and the film industry doesn’t do too badly either when it can feature the glamorous locations and storylines. Though the subject matter might see it getting robbed, or trashed, its new-found celebrity will bring the punters flocking in.

The Taj Mahal, in Atlantic City, reported interest in its poker games had gone through the roof after its appearance as the place where ambitious poker players met to conspire in 1998’s Rounders, while in Las Vegas, though Caesar’s Palace has always been one of the destination casinos in Sin City, after ‘the wolf pack’ took its presidential suite as base camp for a night of mischief and mayhem in 2009’s The Hangover, it is now one of the landmarks in the minds of men looking for a weekend they’ll never forget (if they can remember it, that is.)

Similarly, you’d be surprised if Russell Brand’s Alvin Stardust, in 2010’s Get Him To The Greek, had any idea that he was partying at Planet Hollywood, but he was, as were the boys looking to catch a show and blow off some steam in 2007’s Knocked Up. Of all the Las Vegas casinos to have made it into film, it is perhaps the Bellagio’s appearance that is the most iconic. Having pulled off a heist to make millionaires out of all of them, the titular eleven of Ocean’s Eleven decamp to the viewing pier that surrounds the famous fountains, to gaze into their swaying jets while Debussy soars on the soundtrack, and consider what exactly they’re going to do until the next film cranks into action.

In Europe, thanks to James Bond, it’s hard to see beyond Monte Carle Casino, where apparently to play the best poker games needs approximately ten million pounds just to sit down – not quite the same as the online pokies Australia loves. Here’s hoping that the cocktails are complimentary!

What good is a movie night without a whole pile of unhealthy snacks to munch on while you curl up for the show? With the price of movie theater tickets and theater snack prices at an all time high, it’s no surprise that people are starting to be more budget conscious and wait until they can watch a movie at home.

When making that snack run, what are some things you should be sure to stock up on? Here’s a list of some of America’s favorite movie night snacks.

Popcorn

Whether heading to the theater or spending the evening at home, classic popcorn is practically a must for your movie night snack list. And as far as most of us are concerned, the more buttery and salty the better, right?

Candy

Skittles, Twizzlers, Starburts, Hot Tamales, M & M’s, Reese’s, Dots, the list goes on. Stock up on your favorites before the show starts and, if you’re lucky, you’ll have a sugar high by the final credits.

Nachos

Salty, gooey, cheesy goodness – what could be better?

Soda

Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Root Beer, orange soda, Sprite…the list of possibilities is long. A nice, cold soda is a nice splurge and is quite refreshing for washing down either a salty or sugary stack of snacks.

Snack mix

Another salty choice. What is it about salty treats that goes so well with movies? We may never know, so until we find out otherwise, eat away!

Chips (and dip!)

Tortilla chips and salsa, queso, bean dip, or your other favorites can be addicting. It doesn’t take much effort to get a chip from the bag, into your dip, and in your mouth. Perhaps that’s why they are such a popular movie snack – you don’t have to take your attention away from the flick on screen!

Cookies

Homemade, store bought, chocolate chip, Oreos, peanut butter, sugar cookies, the list of sugary options goes on. Put a batch in the oven before the show starts and pause for an intermission when they’re done. Beware, though. The smell of baking cookies may make it difficult to stay focused on the movie!

Ice Cream

One of America’s favorite indulgences, a big bowl of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, and a cherry on top sounds like the perfect addition to any good movie night at home. Whether you pick chocolate, vanilla, rocky road, mint chocolate chip, or some other crazy flavor is up to you.

Fresh Fruit/Veggies

Looking for a more healthy option that still tastes sweet and delicious? Fresh fruit or vegetables can be a fun option for movie snacking! Apple slices, carrots or broccoli and ranch, a bowl of fresh strawberries, or frozen grapes can all be a healthy snacking option that you can munch on in the dark without having to worry what your waistline will look like when the lights come back on.

Hot dogs

An American favorite that’s not just for the baseball stands! Throw some on the grill, grab a bag of potato chips, and settle in for a delicious meal in front of the screen.

You are now prepared. Enjoy the movie!

With such a footfall of people on a daily basis; local cinema’s offer a range of absolutely fantastic opportunities for both small and corporate businesses. It might not be the first place you’d think of to promote your products and services; however it makes absolute sense; considering the opportunities available and the number of people who attend UK cinema’s each and every day. As such; we thought we’d take a quick look at just two of the main advertising possibilities and why you should be utilising them as part of your marketing campaign.

Firstly; most cinema’s will have a stand or an area where you can leave brochures and leaflets to advertise services and businesses in the local area. It’s well worth the time and expense to leave a bunch of your company brochures…after all; who knows who may pick one up. It’s all a part of ensuring your business has exposure wherever potential customers may go and with such a variation of people attending cinema screenings; you should by all means be utilising these promotional opportunities. If you haven’t done so already; find a decent graphic designer and a competitive but quality brochure printing company and have an initial run put together…of course you can use such brochures in any number of ways and leaving some at the cinema should be just one utilisation.

Secondly; the majority of cinema screenings will show ads before trailers. Whilst this isn’t one for local businesses due to the cost of such ads; if you’re a national business…you could do very well from a pre-film advert. Of course it will work differently for different industries; however you’re potentially getting your brand and business in front of thousands of people per week for a fee much less than TV advertising. As we say; it’s not for everyone but if you have the marketing budget available; go for it!

All in all; advertising in cinema’s is a method which many businesses overlook for one reason or another; however with such a footfall of the public, you could be missing out on many a sale or enquiry if you’re not utilising such social places as part of your advertising campaign.

This year has been areal treat for animation movie fans! Some of the highly expected movies released this year. First Brave then Madagascar 3: Europe’s most wanted and now Ice Age 4: continental drift! Before getting into the movie review, let me give a brief summary on the previous movies. The 1stmovie is about Manny, Sid and Diego becoming friends and reuniting an Indian baby to his father by fighting all the dangers (including Diego’s pack). Manny has always thought that he is the last of his species, but he meets the love of his life Ellie (who thinks she’s a possum!) in the 2ndmovie! The 3rdmovieis when Sid feels he has “mothering instincts” in him and “decides” to adopt three dinosaur eggs! He gets abducted to an underground dinosaur world by the real mother and his friends go behind them to rescue him.

The plot:

For me, the protagonist of the Ice Age series is not Manny, Sid or Diego! It is the primitive squirrel;Scratwho in his obsession of getting the acorn, “unknowingly” creates havoc leading to the beginning of every movie! This time he causes a bigger chaos (literally) and is the reason behind the massive continental drift. Manny (Ray Romano), Diego (Denis Leary), Sid (John Leguizamo) and Sid’s granny (Wanda Sykes) get carried away on a slab of ice in the process. Unable to find the way back home, they get stuck in the middle of the sea.

The movie is all about their struggle to get back home. In their attempts, they bump into villainous Captain Gutt(a ferocious ape!) and his cronies including a blunt-witted seal (Nick Frost), a deranged rabbit (Aziz Ansari) and a saber-toothed she-cat (Jennifer Lopez) who try to attack Manny and his troop to feed on their flesh. Though they start with rivalry, it turns to a romance for Diego and Shira.

Has Diego finally found his love? Will Manny ever meet his wife Ellie (Queen Latifah) and daughter Peaches (Keke Palmer)? And the most important question of all: will Scrat ever get the jinxed acorn he has been lusting after? The rest of the movie answers these questions!

The background score and direction:

The background score is something that definitely has to be lauded. “Chasing the Sun” song will linger in your mind even after coming out of the theatre. The movie syncs perfectly with the background score. The 3D effects meet expectations and are exceptionally done. The directors, Steve Martino and Mike Thurmeier have taken the plot fabulously, but falls a point short of the previous movies. However, their characterization is superb and every actor has done an excellent job with their character.

My verdict:

I am someone who almost grew up with watching the Ice Age series. I was waiting to watch this latest series and my expectations were running high. With the hilarious trailers and teasers, my anticipations upped a notch. Though Ice Age 4 will leave a smile on your face once you come out of the theater, it did lack the “wow” factor. However, it is a commendable movie and is a great family-watch!

Many blockbuster movies owe much of their glory to the publishing industry. If not for the popularity gained by the following books, it would have not been possible for the majority of the public to realize their existence. Let’s look at some of the popular movies based on book and explore the magic behind its success in the movie industry.

The Lord of the Rings

This would probably be one most loved book transformed into a movie. It is not solely because of the alluring character of Legolas (Orlando Bloom), but simply because of the depth of the film. It speaks of the natural tendency of man to be frail and its struggle to fight his own dark side. Nevertheless, the directorial skill of Peter Jackson, who has won numerous awards in the Academy, and the award winning visual effects of the movie is enough to bring to life the character you portrayed in the pages of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Message in a Bottle

Nicholas Film has many novels brought to life in the big screen, but one of the first, if not the first novel, that made him popular with movie fanatics is the movie casting Kevin Costner and Robin Wright Penn. Luis Mandoki sincerely captivated the emotions of the characters in this tragic love story. It brought tears to many audience and those who have read the book are very much satisfied with how he managed to stay true to its story line. Since you fell in love with this movie, there is no reason why you wouldn’t love other movies based on his novels like The Notebook and A Walk to Remember.

Beastly

Although it is based on the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Alex Finn added a twist to this modern fairy tale through his novel “Beastly. This is one of the very first films created by CBS. Although it received both positive and negative views, the prosthetics done with Alex Pettyfer is enough reason for anyone to applaud the efforts of the team who brought it to the big screen. The acting of the characters is well applauded and is one of the best books ever transformed into a movie.

The DaVinci Code

Similarly, this book written by Dan Brown was critically condemned by some Catholic countries including the Philippines. It was hailed as a heretic book and thus the movie not widely accepted. Nevertheless, those who have watched the film appreciate the fictional depiction of the author in relation to the alleged secret organization Opus Dei and its quest of the Holy Grail. It is a modern thrilling movie anyone with an open-mind is sure to enjoy.

The Chronicles of Narnia

This is one of the novels that you should let your children watch. It is a great way to introduce them to film and book analysis.

I hadn’t seen Hot Tub Time Machine until Sunday just gone; but with it being shown on Channel 4, I thought I’d give it a try and put together a little review for you all!

Taking a lead from aging Rock Stars going back to the time that made them famous, John Cusack left his action and romance leads behind and went back to his roots to star in slapdash 80’s time-travel comedy ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’.

The concept? They don’t come much higher than this! A night of male bonding at a ski resort involving a nuclear-powered Russian energy drink and a mysterious incident in an outdoor hot tub sent Adam (Cusack) his two friends, and his teenage nephew on a whirlwind back to the 80’s – the era of leg-warmers and shoulder pads. The only way back to the twenty-first century is to relive the craziest night of their teenage lives and go through the same traumatic events they did back in the 80’s, but do they dare change the course of history? They start to realise how much better their present lives would be if things had happened differently.

The film takes many of the concepts from other films such as ‘Back to the Future’ with the idea of 80’s time travel and trying not to screw up the space-time continuum by changing events that occur throughout. Anything else we’ve seen before? Seeing old friends and enemies? Check. Finding out something embarrassing about a loved one? Check. Making sure romances stay the same? Check. It has also been said that the concept is very much like 2009’s ‘The Hangover’ with the idea of a group of delirious guys getting up to no good. But where ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ scores over ‘The Hangover is the script which is quite the opposite replacing brash overconfidence with a looser, more playful sense of humour.

Although the film may not be seen as a classic in decades to come, it definitely works for a laid back Saturday night film and takeaway with the charm and chemistry of the cast making up for the faults in terms of the plot and is definitely worth a look into for all those true children of the 80’s who will derive some nostalgic satisfaction from the film. It isn’t a masterpiece, but there’s a laid back crowd pleaser lurking somewhere in there!

Following is a list of the top five celebrity couples who brought their work home with them.

Couple: Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

Wedding Date: December 24, 1990

Movies: “Far and Away” (1992) and “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999)

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman met on the set of the film “Days of Thunder” in 1989 and were married in 1990. Their first appearance in a film together as husband and wife was the adventure-drama “Far and Away” where Tom butchers an Irish accent and Nicole’s wildly curly hair dominates every scene she’s in. Nine years later, the couple appeared in legendary director Stanley Kubrick’s uncomfortably enthralling movie, “Eyes Wide Shut.” Mirrored by their lack of chemistry on the screen, the couple divorced in 2001 due to irreconcilable differences.

Couple: Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger

Wedding Date: August 19, 1993

Movies: “The Getaway” (1994)

Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger met in 1991 on the set of the less-than-successful romantic comedy “The Marrying Man.” They dated for two years, enjoying their status as the “it” couple, before tying the knot in 1993. The next year, Alec and Kim starred in their last film together, a remake of the 1972 crime-thriller, “The Getaway.” In 2000, after six years of a turbulent marriage, Kim filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple officially divorced in 2002.

Couple: Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith

Wedding Date: December 31, 1997

Movie: “Ali” (2001)

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith met for the first time in 1990 when she auditioned for the part of Smith’s girlfriend on the popular TV show “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Jada didn’t get the part because she was deemed “too short” for the role. Good thing for these two there’s no height restriction on love. After four years of marriage, Will and Jada finally shared some screen-time in the biopic film about sports legend, Muhammad Ali, aptly titled “Ali.” The couple has not appeared together in a movie since, but they are still married and have two children together, Willow and Jaden.

Couple: Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor

Wedding Date: May 13, 2000

Movies: “Zoolander” (2001), “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” (2004), and “Tropic Thunder” (2008)

Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor met in 1999 while filming the pilot episode of the sci-fi comedy “Heat Vision and Jack.” Ben directed guest-star Christine into his life and married her the following year. Since then, the couple has starred in three movies together. Ben and Christine celebrated their 12-year wedding anniversary last May.

Couple: Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell

Wedding Date: -

Movies: “Overboard” (1987)

While Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell met on the set of the 1968 film “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band,” the couple did not become romantically involved until they met again on the set of the 1984 film, “Swing Shift.” While not involved in a traditional statutory marriage, the two have been together for a significant period of time and are considered partners in a common-law marriage. Goldie and Kurt have co-starred in one film together: the romantic comedy “Overboard.”

Which Hollywood couple would you like to see starring in a film together?

During the 1950s, writer Robert A. Heinlein penned a science fiction serial for The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, initially called “Starship Soldier”. The story followed the exploits of a young soldier and his experiences during an interstellar war. It was criticized for its themes of militarism and fascism.

Nearly forty years later, the novel would make its way to the big screen. Helmed by Robocop director Paul Verhoeven, the adaptation of the story would take on a life of its own, modernizing the ideas of Heinlein and layering in satire and buckets of gore and violence – something Verhoeven demonstrated in other projects. While the film received mixed reviews, it garnered a cult-like status from science fiction fans. In the years to follow, the movie’s subsequent sequels would fail to live up to expectations.

Today, producer Toby Jaffe (Total Recall) is looking to reboot the franchise, but instead of taking inspiration from Verhoeven, he’s told Empire that he’s looking to Heinlein’s original sci-fi epic. “Verhoeven took [Robert Heinlein's 1959 novel] from one extreme and made it almost comical, whereas our job is to be a little more faithful to the book, and ground it a little more,” he said.

The change, of course, has just as much to do with the current Hollywood climate as it does with retreading old ground. Getting the greenlight on an R-rated picture is difficult these days as studios often look to reaching the masses with a PG-13 rating. Jaffe and other producers did the same for their Total Recall remake starring Colin Farrell. Bigger audiences, bigger box office, right?

Regardless of the amount of violence or satire, the original Starship Troopers novel featured a lot of concepts that weren’t utilized for Verhoeven’s film – like the Jump Suits (mobile armored suits soldiers donned during warfare). A reboot more closely aligned with the novel should provide the filmmakers with a way to reintroduce the story to both new and old Starship Troopers fans while still keeping it fresh and that has us excited.

The Starship Troopers remake still has a bit of a ways to go. The project is still in the early stages with a release date yet to be announced.
